The region of Oaxaca is arguably one of the most beautiful regions in Mexico. Its mountainous terrain and agave (cocoa) plantations highlight some of the most beautifully rugged scenery in the country. The city of Oaxaca boasts some beautiful plazas, museums and markets. Not only is this area a naturalist’s paradise as well as a UNESCO designated city for Spanish Colonial and pre-Hispanic architecture, it is also the culinary capital of Mexico. It’s a hot bed of arts and crafts—everything from fine art, rug weaving, black pottery, textiles, wood carving to knife making.
People often find themselves drawn to Oaxaca for the old colonial architecture but stay for the gourmet food, craft beer and Mescal—a traditional drink made from agave. The sampling possibilities are endless. What better way to unwind and reenergize after a long day of taking in the sites than by sipping a cold beer and munching on a fresh Tlayuda?
This region is best discovered through the eyes of a local. Our Mexican based contact, Alvin Starkman is an incredible resource. He knows the area intimately and more importantly, knows the indigenous people with whom he has deep connections. Whether celebrating the Day of the Dead with the locals, tasting an exotic mescal or a delicious craft beer, driving with a Zapotec farmer to the agave fields to sample ‘agua miel’ or having hot chocolate in the home of one of Mexico’s most celebrated artists, we are experiencing Oaxacan culture in a way rarely possible on a group tour. It is a fabulous cultural and gastronomical feast.
Imagine the National Geographic, Discovery and Food Channels all rolled into one amazing adventure! That sums up the experience we had on the last year’s inaugural Spirit of Oaxaca; Mescal and Beer Lovers’ Cultural Tour. We loved it so much we are doing it all over again in 2014, November 1 – 9!!
